2008 Olympics

One of my kids' assignments for our study of the Olympics is to track the medals of a country of their choice. DS#1 chose Australia, while DS#2 and DD chose China. I found this awesome little widget (next post), that updates automatically, telling us which countries have won how many medals. Too cool. Or you can click here to get up to date Olympic Medal Standings!

Using Homeschool Share's Olympic Lapbook and Grace Bound Books' Olympic Unit Study, we have discussed some Symbols and Traditions of the Olympics. We also discussed and watched the Opening Cermonies. Last week, we read Magic Tree House Hour of the Olympics, and learned about the Ancient Olympics. A GREAT picture book for the modern Olympics is Olympics! by B. G. Hennessey.

You can read more about Olympic Spirit here. And be sure to check out the official Olympics Fun Page where you can download wallpaper, screen savers, and even get your own Olympics Personal Trainer.

DS#1 and I are reading Eric Liddell: Something Greater than Gold by Janet & Geoff Benge. This is a great biography about Olympian Eric Liddell, who is also featured in Chariots of Fire. He grew up in a Missionary Family and refused to let fame or glory get in the way of his pursuit and obedience of God.

We will be holding a Family Olympics next week, and both of the boys have created events for the occasion. We also have Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games for the Wii. Not only is this game fun, but it has stirred up a lot of excitement for my kids about the Olympics. They are learning about many of the sports that will be held at the Summer Olympics this year. We've also unlocked the Gallery Mode, which features loads of Olympic Trivia, so it's even eduational :-) My kids have no idea they are doing school when they play this game, LOL!!

And of course, we are studying China, but that is another post altogether :-)
