Camping

Dad took DS#1 on an overnight hike. DS was so excited- they'd been planning the details of this for weeks, just waiting for nice weather to coincide with Dad's days off-- then everyone got sick, putting it off another three weeks. Well, the day finally arrived and off they went.

After awhile, it was time for a lunch break.

We had DS try his pack out a few times around the house
before going, but he said his pack was heavier than he remembered.
They had to take a lot of breaks to make it to their destination.

They saw a lot of wildlife along the way and where they camped.
an eagle, a vulture (flying), an alligator, a gopher tortoise...

DS built a shelter, just for kicks. They did wind up getting rain,
but he reported that his shelter was still dry when he checked it in the morning.
He also thought he saw signs that one of their "neighbors"
might have used it over night. Good job!

You can just see the hammocks they were going to sleep in.
The mosquito net on the hammock behind the firewood was
too short to reach the ground, though, so they decided to use
the tent instead. It was a good thing, as they had quite a little
storm later in the evening...
They had the typical hot dogs for dinner....
... and beans. He looks mighty hungry to me!

It was pretty cool out when they got up in the morning. DS is drawing a picture of a bird he saw.

Three miles they had to hike to get to their campsite...
now three miles back to come home...

The load was a little lighter, though, having eaten
most of their food and drank most of their water...

It was a great trip! DS learned how to use a compass, how to use a hatchet, and how to start and maintain a fire responsibly. And of course, his favorite part, getting to observe so much wildlife! I'm sure there will be more trips like this one in the future.
