OK- so my kids are all dying to see the new movie that comes out this week! I can't blame them- it looks cute! I couldn't resist making it a mini unit study to do alongside our other things, either! Here are some things I found to do....
Of course, we started out by reading the book! DD loved the suspense and agreed that "a person's a person, no matter how small." She was making the funniest grimaces as I read about the perils Horton and the Whos faced!
Along the lines of FIAR, we have covered the following things:
Social Studies: A person's a person no matter how small. Horton defends and protects the Whos because they are smaller than he- even at great peril to himself. It is important to remember to look out for those who are smaller than ourselves.
Language: Sticking with someone through "thick and thin." Although Horton says through "thin and thick" to keep the rhyme going, but we discussed how this means going through the easy stuff as well as the hard stuff in life with our friends and family.
Art: The drawings are full of little items, but I felt compelled to point out how Dr. Seuss drew the lines depicting the Whos' voices when the kangaroo could finally hear it on the 2nd to last page.
Music: We happened to have the Soundtrack from Seussical the Musical, and several of the tracks (3, 4, 5, 9, 12, 14, 15, 26 and 27) follow Horton's story. We listened to those and danced around the living room- I'm sure we put on quite the show! This CD is so much fun- it might be worth the $8.99 investment to buy the whole CD on MP3s from amazon.com. The entire CD covers other Dr. Seuss stories as well, so we might just read some of those so DD can know what we are talking about as we listen to the other songs...
Here are some fun things we found on the interent:
I found these EASY (and DELICIOUS) Elephant Ears on Homegrown Hearts. She has loads of other ideas on there, as well!

The movie was great! Here is an awesome review of it, pointing out the spirituality that is tucked inside... He sums it up better than I ever could!

Dr. Seuss is classic; after seeing Horton Hears a Who i was reminded how much that guy can pack into a simple storyline... they didn't add much to the original story either except for the usual Jim Carreyisms.
Thanks!
